I decided that was it, I want
to start doing something with my life, I need a hobby, and I have a craving
that needed to be filled. That is when Jonnie On Cars was born. I jumped in and
started writing, learning more and more along the way, enjoying every single
moment of it. Plans are also in motion to have a YouTube channel going, just to
add a bit more oomph.
While attempting to promote Jonnie On Cars, I had someone
asking me where I come from, and what motoring experience I have. Good
question, and one that needs to be answered.
In short, I am an old fashioned 30 year balding, ham fisted
egghead, with a love for mechanical engineering, Victorian era architecture,
and the little things in life. I am an average guy, with no special training behind
the wheel, and mostly everything I know about cars is self-taught. Even my
driving I’ve learned through reading, and then trying the theory when the
occasion would arise, that, and stealing my mother’s car.
I have never worked in for a motoring company in my life, but
did odd jobs for a distributor of vehicles that came from the docs for a little
extra income. My passion and love for cars however, that has always been in
there. One of my first memories is sitting with my dad in his car. I don’t know
where we were, or why we were waiting. It was very cloudy, and raining if I am
not mistaken. We were playing a game. We had to identify the cars within a
couple of seconds, regardless of visibility, and with no hints.
Then there was the bullnose Mini Panel van which my dad got
as a project car, I was about 5, and remember its horrendous colour . It was a
funny brownish, creamish colour. My dad wanted to restore it, and started
stripping it down, all the way. He never finished it though. It was another
abandoned project. Back then I did not understand why he did what he did. Now
however, it’s as clear as daylight.
There was always something about cars, and up to this day I
cannot put my finger on it, the easiest way to explain it would be to like it
to something you just understand, you get it, you don’t know why or how, but it’s
something you’ve understood all your life.
I was never able to afford my dream car, and even now,
unable to obtain at least one of my favourites. But I did have one classic,
which will always be in my memories. It was a yellow 1982 VW Gold GL – all original,
well almost. I had to change the fuel pump to an electric one as the old
mechanical pump ceased to exist, and I could not find a replacement.
One day I would like to do a restoration, the black money
pit. There is just something about building and rejuvenating, especially in
older cars. There are few things more beautiful and proud then a gleaming,
rebirthed classic, but that might just be my mind breaking down little by
little.
This is me then, no one special, no one in particular. Just
a guy named Juan Loubser, with a passion and a dream.
